Recovery chooses who to recover.
It is interesting to know that recovery from alcoholism does not cater to anyone who happens to be alcoholic. Those who have personality disorders are most like not able to recover from such fate. It helps to be a person who has the want and the desire to quit drinking alcohol, because agencies and institutions that work hard to alleviate alcoholism in a particular social system can not even be of any help for people who do not find it in their hearts to move on from their addiction.
Alcoholism admittedly has a social stigma attached to it. It helps to observe some regulatory measures about helping alcoholics recover from their addiction. Here are some tips:
Keep them away from the past. Alcoholics who are on the process of recovery, no longer want to be associated with the people and things who has something to do with the problematic days of their lives. Once they see something that would make them remember their past, they will most probably find it harder to move on with their lives.
Make them feel that they are never alone. It must be understood that the alcoholics who are recovering from alcoholism are going through a difficult time in their lives. Most of the time, they would feel alone. Survival seems to be the hardest to them them. It is then helpful to make them feel that they are not alone with their journey, and that the support can always be given from people around.
Show them their worth. Recovery can be the time when alcoholics feel that they are at their most worthless stage in their lives. Showing them how wasted they lives got is indeed a more wasted act. These people are still special and lovable people, who just stumbled over some trials that they had to go through. Encourage them to continue fighting. Show them that there is more to life.
These will only work for people who choose to be recovered.
